A modem router, also commonly referred to as a combo router or gateway, is an all-in-one networking device that combines the functions of both a standalone modem and a standalone wireless router into a single unit.

It both connects directly to your internet service provider’s network to receive an internet connection, and then distributes that connection as a Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet network for all of your devices. It removes the need for two separate pieces of network hardware, but almost always offers lower performance and customisation than using separate dedicated modem and router devices. These are the units that almost all ISPs rent out to customers by default.
