Data Exfiltration

Data exfiltration is the unauthorized transfer of sensitive information from a computer or network to an outsider.

Hackers often do this by installing malware that secretly copies files, emails, or login details. Sometimes, it can also happen accidentally if an employee sends confidential documents to the wrong place.

For example, a cybercriminal might steal customer records from a company’s server and upload them to a hidden website.
